SAGINAW, MI- Many classrooms aimed at early education around the nation are adorned with paintings and photos of animals, most of which can be found in zoos and aquariums.

Some lucky kids in Saginaw will be able to see those animals up close, thanks to the Early On program, organized by the Saginaw Intermediate School District.

According to a press release by the ISD, 56 families were awarded one-year memberships to the Saginaw Children's Zoo on May 22.

The move was made possible through funding from an American Rescue Plan (ARP) state grant. The initiative, organized by the Saginaw ISD Early On program, was done to support families with young children who may benefit from early intervention services.

In addition to the zoo memberships, participating families will receive an educational goody bag that includes animal-themed books and stuffed animals to better engage a child's imagination and promote early literacy skills.

Early Childhood Special Services Supervisor Meghan Shepard said she's grateful to be able to share the summer experience with children who can absorb the most from a fun trip to the zoo and create lasting memories.

"Our families were extremely appreciative to receive this invaluable opportunity for their children to enjoy the zoo," Shepard said.

The release said that due to the success of the initial zoo membership offerings, the ISD has announced more passes will be made available to current Saginaw County families enrolled in Early On.

To participate in the next rollout, interested families can visit the Saginaw Children's Zoo on Thursday, June 1, between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. to secure their passes. To ensure availability, families are asked to RSVP with their program provider.
