A suspected burglar overdosed on heroin after he was caught in the act of breaking into a discount store in Shelby Township, police reported.

The incident happened about 7:45 p.m. June 1 as a police officer was conducting patrols of business parking lots on Hall Road.

According to police, the officer encountered a 42-year-old Clinton Township man who had several stolen items from a discount store sticking out from his waistband under his shirt. More items were recovered that police say the suspect took from the store.

"As he was being walked to a nearby patrol car, he struggled to walk and started showing signs of overdosing," police said in a news release. "The male then told officers that he had just ingested heroin as police initially approached him."

Police arrested and transported the suspect to a local hospital for treatment. Once he was medically cleared, he was taken to the Shelby Township Police Department for booking/processing.

Investigators said police were watching the parking lots due to an increase in larceny from autos, stolen vehicles, and stolen catalytic converters in the area.

That's when the officer spotted the suspect walking into a local discount store. As the male exited approximately 20 minutes later, officers approached him.

Officers discovered the stolen items. Inside the backpack, police found fentanyl, several used syringes, a large hunting knife, and several tools such as bolt cutters and tin snips.

Detectives requested a warrant for possession of fentanyl, possession of burglary tools, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police did not release the suspect's name or disposition.
