A local woman was arrested Wednesday on felony warrants for the alleged theft of a hospital patient's wallet, cards and checks in March and the attempted cashing of one of the checks.

Alexis Alexandria Hawkins, 24, who lists a Springwood Road address, was taken into custody shortly before 3 p.m. on Airway Street on warrants for second-degree forgery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and theft by receiving, punishable by up to six years in prison. She also had a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear.

Hawkins remained in custody Thursday on a $7,000 bond and is set to appear today in Garland County District Court.

According to court records, Hawkins lists no prior felony history, but was convicted of a misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, on Jan. 22, 2019, and sentenced to one year in jail, all suspended, six months' probation and fined $960.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on March 18, a local man filed a report with Hot Springs police noting he had been hospitalized due to a head injury from a car wreck. During his stay in the hospital, from March 12-16, his wallet containing money, debit-credit cards, and a few blank checks was taken from his room.

On March 15, a woman, later identified as Hawkins, allegedly attempted to cash one of the victim's checks at Chex-2-Cash, 1109 Central Ave. Detective Christopher Savage obtained a copy of the check from the victim and noted it was for $900 and made out to "Alexis Hawkins" for "housework."

The victim said he had never met Hawkins nor given her a check for housework. Employees at Chex-2-Cash were able to verify Hawkins had provided an Arkansas ID when she attempted to cash the stolen check and confirmed the person seen on the ID was the one trying to cash the check.

A warrant for Hawkins' arrest was issued on March 27.
